Tallahassee Florida Culture

Some of the most pristine beaches are near the Panhandle's Forgotten Coast, and the Gulf of Mexico is just 20 miles away. The area around Tallahassee, then known as Anhaica, was the main Apalachee Indian village. This place represents the place where Florida's Fort Walton culture existed from 1050 to 1500.
Spanish colonists, who had controlled Florida for the past 250 to 300 years, maintained control over other areas of eastern and western Florida, while central Florida offered a more open environment and greater freedom than the rest of the state. It was called "Middle Florida" and focused around the capital Tallahassee and eventually extended to the central counties of Alachua and Marion in Florida, encompassing parts of Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Palm Bay counties. The majority of the population remained in the northern part of the state until the end of the Second Seminole War in 1842. Rumors have it that the few people left in Tallahassee began as a settlement of Apalachee Indians from south and southwest Florida.
Cities like Tampa and Orlando offer the feel of a Midwestern or Northeastern city, while Miami is unique because it looks more like a city in the middle of the United States than the southern part of Florida.
